Stepping Stones

If you were writing your autobiography, how would you define your chapters? Would it be by life stages, like schools or colleges. Or maybe by jobs? Or relationships? Perhaps homes? I'm pondering this just now because if I think of My Life in Pieces, I can recognise that my current 'piece' is actually made up of multiple smaller pieces which are almost like little stepping stones towards a new bigger piece. To offer some context, (and possible explanation for why it's been a while!) we have been busy moving out of a flat in Edinburgh, and into my mother's across in Glasgow while we have been househunting for something bigger to suit our lifetsyle. It has been quite a time, with an enormous search area and associated viewings stretching right across Scotland. The mental machinations of visualising living and travelling to/from each prospective property have been exhausting - and that's before we even get to the nail biting process of the Scottish...

A Life in Pieces

When I look back on my life to date, I tend to think of it in clear distinct units, that are connected with more blurry feeling journeys, often with me sandwiched between siblings in the back of a car. For example, it starts with a Glasgow shaped bit, with pre and primary school, followed by an Algierian filling before a sliver of Glasgow again. Beirut was next, with an interesting connection from there via Syria and Jordan down to Jeddah. The join of Jeddah back to Glasgow was another adventure that included sailing up the Suez Canal and visiting the pyramids. I sometimes wonder if it is the fact that these 'pieces' were all so different to each other - like slate and CD - that makes them stand out, but either way, I have some very clear recollections of them all. Given that all of these bits and their joins comprised less than a decade, means that in life terms they really were just fragments, but important and meaningful ones....

Thistle Do!

I have had the idea to do a thistle for a wee while now, since I came across the lovely purpley shade and the pale green of some of the compact discs I was smashing and using. The colours struck me as being particularly Scottish and reflective of the flora we often get here. It has taken several different attempts, but none that felt comfortable - they seemed too forced before - but this one, on a slighly larger scale than normal for me, seemed to work out ok. It's obviously only an impression, and not anatomically or rather botanically accurate, but hey - who cares?! Whether or not I can ever replicate another similar version remains to be seen, but I am quite pleased to have got this one out of my cluttered head and into reality at last.
